Why do I care about editing and think you should too? Am I just a frustrated schoolmarm? Well, no. It's not because of arbitrary standards, regulations and conventions. It's because I want what you want – for your readers to hear you, to get your message.
Typos, clunky structure and wobbly syntax can distract your readers; in trying to figure out what you mean, or noticing "mistakes", your readers can get tripped up, fall out of the flow of your writing, and lose the gist of your message.
It's about the meaning, not the rules. But the rules help to communicate the meaning.
I can say, with great conviction, that your worth as a person has nothing to do with whether you can spot a dangling infinitive at fifty paces, or spell "misspell" (delicious meta factoid: "misspell" is one of the most misspelled words in the English language). I know for a fact that you have countless gifts and talents; editing happens to be one of mine.
